Capturing the essence of the Coast: Susan Wickstrand

When I think of our oceans, waves and beaches my mind still... thank God... goes to thinking of all the joy I receive from them (as opposed to defaulting to the myriad of challenges they have).

It's because of that category, the joy category, that images like the one above connect with me. This is Robert Rauschenberg meets Paul Gauguin (with a dash of Gerry Lopez).

Recently I had the good fortune of being interviewed by Glenn Sakamoto for Liquid Salt; "Profiles of the people who make the art, culture + lifestyle of surfing". I was very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of a group of ridiculously talented artists, shapers, surfers and such. SNEAK PEEK...It's taking some serious guts today as I chop up some insanely, ridiculously gorgeous Art Brewer (Pictured above with Bunker Spreckels) photographs for our collaborative collage. All with his blessing and frankly nudging. Take a deep breath...focus and commit, I can do this, I can do this...reminding myself that Art told me, "surprise me" I hope and pray I do him justice with this honor. His work is impeccable. Dave Rastovich in Indo momentarily adrift on a reef in the sea....I love my job. "Sine Amore Perimus", "Without Love We Perish" inked into the work (as on Rasta's right foot). I scoured shops the past weekend for Indo incense boxes etc. to collage in. You can meet me, Art Brewer and view this completed artwork live on Sat. I was fortunate enough to have ABC's hit comedy, "Modern Family" contact me for more artwork this year. I will have seven artworks; oil paintings and limited edition prints in an episode shot in a Malibu Beach home for the April 14th episode. I'll post all images to look for in a week or so, then you can play eye spy a Wickstrand on that wall : )

I'm the newest member of the SDSA & will be attending the Awards Luncheon with my artwork for Auction at the LA Skirball Cultural Center this Sunday.

My artwork, "Sea Peace, Sea Love" will be donated this Sun., March 7th to the SDSA (Set Decorators Society of America) Awards Luncheon Auction in Los Angeles at the Skirball Cultural Center honoring, an amazing organization; "Inner City Arts" http://www.inner-cityarts.org/
